At Flat Hill Farm, our journey toward regenerative agriculture began in 2022 with pasture-raised poultry—and a deep desire to care for our land with more intention. Our small herd of beef cattle and laying hens had long been part of our rhythm, but we began to see how traditional grazing methods were wearing down the pastures rather than renewing them.
In seeking out a better way, we found not just a method, but a calling.
In 2024, we joined a soil health program led by the American Farmland Trust (AFT) and the National Resource Conservation Service (NRCS). Alongside ten other farms in Connecticut and Massachusetts, we began shaping a long-term plan—not just for productivity, but for regeneration, for healing, and for honoring the land that sustains us.
Flat Hill Farm Grass-fed beef is more nutrient-dense than grain-fed, offering higher levels of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), and antioxidant vitamins A and E. Often times people overlook the quality of beef, pork, chicken and eggs they choose to purchase and eat. While the meat you’re eating may taste good, it’s most likely bad for you and even worse for the environment. Meat from heritage breeds remains your best choice as a healthy consumer.
Heritage breeds are purebred livestock and poultry, often found listed on the Livestock Conservancy. They are known for their foraging, longevity and the ability to mate naturally. They are much healthier and heartier animals (meaning less prone to disease) but cost significantly more to raise. They are also more parasite resistant than commercial breeds.
